There's a pretty steep learning curve but once you catch on, it's very reliable. If you're wanting a more modern board, I'd stick with what's already been mentioned like Synchronet or Mystic. If you're going more retro, maybe something like Maximus/NT might be worth it. However, the big problem as it's been said, is DOS doors under modern Windows. I ran my BBS under OS/2 for decades before switching to Linux.
