  There were some recent changes, due to checkin modes, net days and
times, etc.

  In amateur radio parlance, nets is short for "networks"...but it's
usually where a bunch of amateur radio operators gather on a repeater,
an Echolink node, or via things such as AllStar, D-Star, DMR, Fusion,
M17, P25, TGIF, etc. -- and have a "Traffic Net". 

  The nets are usually sponsored by a particular ham radio club, or
they can be related to a certain region, or to another hobby. There
can also be weather nets related to Skywarn, Community Emergency Response
Team (CERT)...or on non-ham radio topics such as Trains/Railroading,
Food, RVing/Camping, Astronomy, Youth, and more.

  There are nets on all bands and all modes practically around the clock,
around the world...and they can be on traditional RF, or with implementing
internet for communications. As long as one can get the traffic out (an
FCC official notes that "We are communicators FIRST, and hams SECOND"),
no matter what the means is...especially if it's a situation involving
the safety of life or protection of property...it works.

  Also, if one doesn't put much into a hobby (I don't care what it is),
they better not be expecting to get much out of it. There's something 
in ham radio for everybody...just as there is with BBSing. It'd be an
awfully boring world if everyone was the same.

  But, if you don't like what's in a message area/network, or on a ham
radio traffic net, there are plenty more out there that may be more to
your liking.
