This seems like an incomplete fix: There are a lot of ways to receive a mail message into the mail base and not all of them will result in the user's alias being in the message header "to" field. 

"mail" messages should all have a "to_ext" header field. If this number matches the user.number, then you should mark the message as read. You should need to do any hard-coded alias/string comparisons.
