Regular people does not know how Internet services are built or operated, considerations such as operating costs are out of the scope of their cognitive abilities.

Power users know these things require a cash flow to be viable, but when so many instances of a given service are provided free of cost you are teaching people not to pay for it. If you believe otherwise, I challenge you to set up an email service which includes calendars and contact management, and market it towards end-users.

Sure, commercial email systems for end users exist but they are usually built around specific niches and require tailoring to their specific audiences. Aunt Karen is not going to pay for a Startmail email account when she can use Yahoo for free.
