People understand that watching ads is a cost of not having to pay money for something. And advertisements are nothing new - Advertisements have been used for decades in television, newspapers, magazines, etc.. It's a way to provide income (or suppliment income) for the company making the content. Many sites on the internet don't require users to pay money to use them, but they still need money to operate. They make money by selling ads or by collecting user data that they sell. Some sites do directly charge users a fee to use them so that they don't need to show ads or collect data (or maybe some do both).
