I find running a local Youtube frontend is much more convenient than paying. If you are on Android you can just install NewPipe and use that instead of the Youtube application. It is every bit as good and it is free, with the bonus point of having integration with other platforms (such as Bandcamp) as well.

But I also think not paying Youtube a dime is a matter of principle. Paying them is yielding to blackmail. They are selling you a solution to a problem they created, and on top of that their solution has plenty of technical limitations using an adblocking frontend does not suffer.
