I can't speak for DOSBox-X, but vanilla DOSBox doesn't do file locking or anything, which can result in corrupted data for things like BBSes where multiple nodes may be accessing the same files, and expecting locks to behave in an expected way. VDos I believe does this correctly, VMs will, dosemu(2) does too. But this is why the DOSBox devs always said on the support forums: don't use DOSBox for non-game software.
