Broadcast TV was required to have a certain amount of hours of "public interest" programming, which often included local/national news. That was done away with at some point over the last 25 years, and now news is just another money-generating entertainment avenue. That said, I'm not sure we can really go back to that system, as it's apparent if a news broadcast does things that the government doesn't like, they can just threaten to strip the broadcaster's licensing. Take a look at the corporation for public broadcasting/NPR/PBS. While yes, NPR does tend to lean left on things (Bias appears to be unavoidable these days), they're nothing like Politico, Huffpost, or any of the far-left news outlets, but that didn't stop the current administration from stripping their funding because Trump didn't like what they were reporting. I'm a loud proponent of "Free Speech doesn't mean free from consequences" but those consequences CAN NOT be government censorship, because then it's not Free Speech. You can say whatever the hell you want. People can't be forced to hear it, nor can the government prevent you from saying it. That all said, The thing that's upset me the most about this Kimmel thing? I've once again wound up AGREEING with Ted Cruz.
