That's what I used to do in Emacs until I discovered the Ctrl-Q thing. I'd guess it's the easiest way. Of course, if you have a decent telnet/comm program you can bind a key (Shift-ESC, for example) to do your "Ctrl-R ~/etc/esc+bracket " or whatever.
