Here's an idea someone gave me the other day, too bad I can't program...
:)

have a program that will take the characters composing a message, and
rearrange them into an ASCII picture!! ('course then you'd need to be
able to decipher it back into a message. . . what a cewl way to encode
something, eh!

or never mind the program, would anyone want to try it out manually?  (I
have absolutely ZERO talent in the visual arts. . .)
