It depends on the effect you are going for.  When going for a very
stylized look I sometimes use the first one.  Sometimes I need to
lighten the lines up so will us ! instead.  Or want heavier stylized
and will double things up.

There is no wrong way.  There is what works esthetically for what you
are trying to do.
