While this is true, anything not made for a fairly standard fixed-width font with typical aspect ratio should include a statement about the font to use. With my pgmtoascii tool I've advised that people prescale the image to match the font aspect ratio. Doing that for the generic xterm font I'm using and I get this for the same source image: WWWWWWW XWWWWWWX XWWWWWWX WWWWWWW XWWWWWWX XWWWWWWW XWWWWWWX XWWWWWWX XXXWWWWWWWXXX WWWWWWWXWWWWWWX XWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWX XWWWWWWWWWWW WWWWWWWXX XXWWWWWWW XWWWWWWWWX WWWWWWW WWWWWWX WWWWWWX WWWWWWX XWWWWWW WWWWWW WWWWWW WWWWWW WWWWWW WWWWWWW WWWWWWW WWWWWW WWWWWWX XWWWWWW WWWWWW WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW WWWWWW XWWWWWWWWWWWX XXXWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW XWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWX XWWWWWWWWWXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXWWWWWWWWX WWWWWXX XWWWWWWWWWX XXXX XWWWWWWW XWWWWWW XWWWWWWWW WWWWWWXX XXXXX My tool does not have the edge detection stuff going on of this one. That edge dectection looks like a nice option for large solid area stuff like this, but it probably isn't going to do nice things to images with lots of thin lines. Like say the one on this page: http://www.jave.de/image2ascii/competition2001/contributions3.html That competition never got judged, but it includes a nice selection of images to tax any programatic ASCII algorithm.
