A while ago I was regularly having to do alignment of columns of numbers in ASCII (well, LAS - Log ASCII Standard) data files. Also inserting space for new columns of data, re-arranging columns of data, extracting some columns. Then our pet programmer put necessary code together for importing and exporting these files (instead of working directly with the LAS files, after indexing) and doing the necessary manipulations. At the time it was a toss-up for ease-of-use between using Excel (or 123, depending on what a machine had got on it) or using a ASCII editor called (IIRC) MegaEdit. Is it still available? Sorry, it's not coming up on Google - a PalmOS application seems to have hijacked the name. Someone else ( http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux- software-2/win-text-editor-that-saves-unix-format-273950/ ) remembers MegaEdit, and his timing (hasn't seen it since 2000~ ) chimes with my experience. That's about when we got our in-house solution to our needs and stopped paying for it. http://fog.ccsf.cc.ca.us/~gknapp/knapp19.html (CHEESY MUSIC WARNING! ) gives a couple of links to it ... which don't work. But it looks as if the files (without installer) are at http://files.chatnfiles.com/Microforum%20-%20Worlds%20Largest% 20Collection%20of%20Windows%20Software%20-%202/TEXTPROC/MEGAEDIT/ It looks to me as if it's "abandonware", but I wouldn't be sure about the legality of using it ; I know that we had to chase around to get licenses for the several copies we had on various machines - which was part of the reason that we ended up doing the job in-house. -- Aidan in Scotland Written at Mon, 25 Feb 2008 09:05 GMT, but posted later.
