My name is Quong Nguyen and I am Tran Nguyen's younger brother. Last weekend Tran and I went out late to a Taco Bell for some food when we were caught in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting in downtown Oakland. Tears are streaming down my face as I write this because Tran pushed me down to safety behind his Honda. He died four hours later at the Alameda County Medical Center. The doctors said he was dead the minute he entered the emergency room but they did their best. I've never really read the internet but he always talked about his friends on alt.ascii-art and making his buffoonish cartoons. He also wrestled with his alcoholism which had haunted him since early high school and his way of overcoming this demon was through laughter. Tran's ashes were scattered over the Pacific on Tuesday in a traditional Buddhist ceremony. His ascii art "farts" will remain on the web for generations to come so he won't be forgotten.
