One way to do text-only counters would by JavaScript, I think; that can
reference external scripts. Then use something like <script
src="http://www.example.com/counter.js?site=wherever"> and have that
/counter.js be a CGI program which counts the hit and then spits out
some JavaScript which does document.write("2837") or the like.

Requires that the visitor have JS turned on, of course.
