Dear Joe, My reason in posting, was about help for the ascii webring. If you aren't offering to help, why have you reposted to this thread? You're wasting my time, downloading a negative reply. On the other hand, I appear to have opened a door to drivel with my tongue-in-cheek delivery. My apologies, if this newsgroup is too drivelly... It's not my fault. It's the nimwits that do it. Honestly, schools shouldn't be accessing usenet. There is nothing but trash on it. I can't think of a time when there was anything else BUT trash on it. Kids shouldn't have access to alt.anal.donkey.gangbang, or alt.binaries.sex.jujitsu. An institution for children, of any age (up to and in many cases including universities), shouldn't be wasting money or time on providing access to the kind of junk media that would even ALLOW the listing of such "groups". It's a free-for-all, and not a serious learning environment. There may be instructional content ON usenet, but it's nature is the lowest common denominator... and that gets pretty low. If schools are having problems with alt.ascii-art, I don't know why it isn't being filtered in the first place, along with 99.999% of the rest of the newsgroups available. Perhaps the folks running school-based networks could use a little more education, themselves. Personally, I know of a few schools that have internet access, which also maintain a usenet server. They carry a handful of relevant newsgroups, some of them purely local. Alt.ascii-art isn't one of the relevant ones. However, I do know of some teachers that download pictures from this newsgroup. They do it, so they can print them out and hang them on the wall, behind their desk. I suppose this is "educational". Here's an old example of an educational cartoon of mine: SISTERS______________________________________by JRO | | | ____________________________________ | | / \ | | / "Don't worry about it, Stacie. As to drivel on AAA, it seems to have reached a peak with automated asskey tools. You can take a program like JAVE, or EmACs, or EmailEffects, and draw, trace, convert - ect., anything you want. Any idiot who can barely type a stickman (on his own) can make an asskey picher with crap like that. This was a lot more fun, when people with a little talent and imagination were typing pictures and posting them... "Assisted" text-art is like "paint-by-number; who cares? Text-art is far enough down on the "art" scale that anybody using "tools" to help make it, is just about as flighty as helium. In conclusion, my advice is... Hell, I don't have any. Read/post or don't read/don't post, whatever you like. I'm not your Principal. For more education, you can drop me a line. Be good, JRO
