Ah, but fiction follows a whole different set of rules. For example,
even though we don't know why people do certain things in reality, it's
more or less expected that we find out sooner or later in a story,
because otherwise the character is just inconsistent and ill conceived.
It's all part of that "truth is stranger than fiction" stuff.
