Hi Peter,

You are not the first one who wanted to persuade me to add layer support
to JavE. In fact I use layers very often when doing pixel imaging and I
know how powerful this technique is. For Ascii-Art it would mean
something new that has never been here before, and - as you already
stated - for ascii animations it was priceless.

I am pretty sure I am able to implement it - but as far as I can see it
would cost me a lot of time. Supporting layers would mean modifications
in very complex parts of JavE - display engine, crash recovery,
jmov-to-editor interaction, selection feature, etc. etc. Also it would
imply lots of other stuff: a new file format, a well designed user
interface to manage the layers and work with them, etc.
At this point when looking at the design and source code of JavE I think
it would be a good idea to write a completly new JavE - starting from
zero with only reusing the agorithms from Jav3.

Unfortunately I do not have the time (or money) to do that. I have to
concentrate on writing my dissertation instead. So I will continue
dreaming of this great feature and rather concentrate on fixing bugs,
making improvements and adding minor features.

About solid spaces: There already is something like that in JavE: In
most situations Shift+Space will provide a solid space. This works e.g.
in the brush tool.
