I did know that there was an alternate-font option for displaying messages (and in mine that's a proportional font) but not until I explored more carefully did I find that while the window size is fixed, I'm able to define the horizontal and vertical pixel sizes of an average character as well as the virtual line spacing. So in fact I can distort a pic to any extent I like in any direction, as well as choosing the font... I could go mad playing with this system if I wanted.
