True ASCII art can be seen without Google. I think it's very simple. It's HTML art. In conventional HTML art, you add color and font tags to the page; with Google Groups, Google adds it for you - but the result is the same, an HTML page that you need a browser to view. Google is just a novel method of producing such art.
