Often Linux has support for some hardware before other vendors do, as long as the specifications are available. The problem with scanners is that the SANE developers have a hard time getting the specs for a large number of scanners, especially parallel scanners. The SCSI and USB SnapScan scanners are supported well. I have an Acer 620UT which works beautifully with the SnapScan USB driver under SANE. Unfortunately the SnapScan homepage for SANE doesn't list any parallel scanners. There is a project to support parallel-SCSI devices, which may make it possible to use a parallel SnapScan as a SCSI device, but that's just a guess.
