Well, Holland has been occupied by the French up until 1815, there are many words in Dutch which were taken straight from French. There is only one Dutch word that i know of that ended up in the French language and that word is "Boulevard", it stems from the Dutch word "Bolwerk", but since the 17th century elite didn't find that elegant enough, the made it sound French and since there was no word in french for "Bolwerk", they have left it in. SHHHH!!!! Not so loud!!!! A Frisian might hear you and get annoyed. You see, Frisian is a language and woe unto the person that says it's a dialect. Anyway, the Frisians live in the north of Holland (or the Netherlands as Frisians insist) in the provence of Frisia. Before 1400-something Frisia was a seperate country, feared for the ferocity of the Frisians. They managed to conquer half of the area which is now Holland but left their mark in the form of villages and cities which almost all end in "-um" like Hilversum, Lochum, etcetera. To the east of Frisia there is the Provence of Groningen, which used to be part of Frisia until somewhere in the 1700's, when we cross the border over to Germany we land smack dab in the middle of Ost-Friesland or Eastern Frisia where they speak a dialect (it is a dialect in Germany) very similar to Frisian, after that, i think you can find your way to Denmark, don't you? :-)) There's the link all the way from Holland to Denmark. Over the years, the languages has been influenced (or contaminated) by neighboring countries and dialects but still there are many similarities.
