Yup, i have read in the 64'er once that Deutshes Bundespost's computers had a
hard time recognising the non-ASCII chars and what two-letter combinations can
be used instead of those chars.
And since i am too lazy to look up all the codes for those chars, i always use
the two-letter equivalent for them.
