I get some 3d focus here when I move a bit away from the screen instead of towards it, as ascii stereograms usually go. I'm not very good at those (where I have to move away) though, and I don't make anything out and loose focus soon. It's been a very long time since I fiddled around with stereogram generation software, but if the artist used something similar, it probably implies he tried to put a too large image with too much detail into it, which means less repetitions, hence much harder to see.
