There are a few tutorials on drawing lines or shading out there on the internet 
and I believe there has been posted one in here about two months ago?

I myself had a good start with drawing a schematic map of my home... village 
for a guy who wanted to come over but did not know the way. I donno if it is 
ascii art, but I think it's a good start to playing with the characters.
