Transparent and translucent are synonyms. The only way to avoid using an alpha channel (that I know of) is to make with that low level code and draw say, only every second pixel of the relevant object. Blending is not available at all to individual members of the ASCII character set. (Read the standard.) Some implementation may add effects to text, but that is not specified by the ASCII character set itself.
