That is true for any converting tool. The resolution with ascii characters is restricted. Most converters take only 1 greyscale pixel per character, some take 4 pixels. Others do not do greyscale conversion but convert in monochrome mode and use up to 3x2 pixels. By hand one can try to somewhat increase the resolution by modifying/combining/... details from the original image.
