I concur with Markus .. and I have told this in this group a long time ago,
people reactions then were also that PRE should do all the work. And it does
.. in most browsers.

I was just not content with "most" so I added a  TT : <PRE><TT>ascii-art
here</TT></PRE> .
CODE should work similar to TT.
