I agree, most people don't learn much that way. They learn how to read
the subtitles long before they learn any English (or whatever), and then
they just keep on reading. It worked for me, but I'm an exception (I
think it may have something to do with the fact that I didn't have a TV
until I was 12 years old and already knew some English).
