I'll be sure to use it in some of my correspondence. I think I'm gonna use the simple sig at the end of this message for now--although the one person I showed it to couldn't figure out what it was. Supposed to be a backpacker with a hiking stick heading toward the mountains. There's supposed to be an indication of speed since my trail name will be MS Express. Love any suggestions on how to make it better. ----- 0 | /\ ----- []-| / /\ ----- /|| / / \ Sorry about the server issues. I'm in the process of moving it to a new, more permanent hosting site and they're having some issues getting the server and DNS set up so it's been down most of the weekend and probably won't get fixed for a day or two (it's being administered by a generous friend of mine who has a real job to do--beggars can't be choosers). Anyway, in the meantime... I'm hiking the AT starting around April 5th (still working on the travel details) from Georgia and will be hiking the 2168.1 miles northward over the following six months. Proceeds from the journey will be used to support MS research and care through the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. My uncle has MS and has found the NMSS to be a tremendous help to him in learning to live with his disease--that's how I originally became involved. Anyway, I realize that this isn't really the right place to ask but since it has some relevance to my original post... If you are at all interested in supporting me, my uncle, the NMSS, and the hundreds of thousands of people in the US with MS it would be absolutely wonderful if you would sponsor me for my journey. You need not make an up-front donation. It's a typical per-mile sponsorship. When I have finished the hike (hopefully at Mt. Katahdin in Maine sometime in September or October) you simply multiply the number of miles I hiked by the amount you sponsored and that's how much you donate. Donations will be made directly to the Maine Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society so you need not worry about any tomfoolery on my part. All of the information about this and my future trail logs (thanks to my mom for keeping these up to date), pictures (thanks to Konica for donating film processing), etc. will be on the website http://www.hikeforacure.org which should be back in operation sometime this week with any luck. Typical sponsorships and the total amount for a successful through-hike of the AT (and if I only hike 100 miles, then you only donate a hundred miles worth) are: 1 cent $21.68 2 cents $43.36 3 cents $65.04 5 cents $108.41 10 cents $216.81 Any donations are wonderful. A 1 cent donation doesn't seem like much but if enough people contribute just a little it really adds up and will benefit the people that suffer with this debilitating disease. Fractional donations are also fine--it's a lot of miles. If you think someone you work with can help out, or a friend, or a relative, feel free to forward this information to whomever you wish. I'm also pursuing corporate sponsorships so if your business has a group that works with charitable organizations or if you just want to put a little sign in your lunch room or something, that would be great (I can send you an example if you want)! Corporate sponsors will have their color logo on both a large Tyvek sign on my pack and on the website so it's also a little free advertising. And as always, charitable donations are tax deductible. In the meantime, please just send me an email with your name, address, email, and the amount you would like to sponsor me for and I will add you to my list. When the server issues get straightened out, I'll send you an email so you can read all about it. At this point, I'm just collecting names and sponsorship amounts, no money (although, if you'd rather make a fixed donation, I can send you the information about how to do that) so it's just a simple email and a great cause. I can be reached at ajwhitney@pobox.com And if you liked reading Bill Bryson's account of the trail (as it sounds like a few of you did), you'll probably enjoy reading some of my trail logs and looking at my pictures. I can't help but get into a few ridiculous situations on such a long trip. That alone should make a small donation worthwhile :) Thanks for taking the time to read this. It means a lot to a lot of people. -- A.J.
