True, but that's not a lot of use if you can't switch from one application to another. Some things you can run in the background (with '&'), but if you want to have, say, two 'vim's open at the same time and switch between them, you need something like screen. (And before someone talks about virtual consoles -- usually there are about six of them, so imagine ten vims open instead.)
