I have found no severe problem .. but as usual have a lot of suggestions. Having tried the program just 20 minutes .. I was thinking it should have a better import of bitmaps. http://openil.sourceforge.net/ is a Opensource imagelibrary - although it is not made with java in mind I think it could be something to base javacode of .. It helps to watch it implemented. Feltpen : I know exactly what you mean with feltpen .. but I'm not sure that feltpen is an acurate english word .. works fine in danish though. Watching the feltpen algorithm in the image2ascii dialog I felt there was a need for more shades .. specially something inbween the MMM and the 888 shade .. the gap in shade seems rather large. Perhaps with dithering ? OBascii : Just did some work with the image 2 ascii convertor .. this is the Thick/thin - B/W algorithm : ___,ooooooooooooooo.___ __oo88888888888888888888888888ooo. ,oo888888888888888888888888888888888888oL____ _o888888888888888888888888888888888888888888P'__ '_ o888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888[ ,.`b. o8888888888888888888888888888888888888888888PYP8L -=',d88. ,888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888b._ ' ===P'' d8888888PPPP8888888888888888888888888888888, YY8888oooooooP' d88888P' 'Y8888888888888888888888888PY88bo_'`P88888PP' 888PP' Y8P' `88''''''''''''`88P Y888' ''' 88P ,oo. d8b ,88 ]88 Y8[ 88. Back to feltpen .. I also think the way to select the "shade" and the size should both be a slidebar instead of a dropbox .. and 4 chars is to low a max for the pen .. make it 20, 30 or 40 something like that Also display the resulting "brush" below in the selection box - like a preview. I imagined something like this : .----------------------------------. | Style: | | / .:' XX dP | | / .:' XX dP | | line dot char feltpen | | (_) (_) (_) (X) | | | | Shade: | | MMM 888 $$$ %%% !!! ::: ... | | MMM 888 $$$ %%% !!! ::: ... | | |----------------------H-------| | | | | Size:[12]+/- chars | | |-----------H------------------| | | __________ | | Preview: | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |__________| | '----------------------------------' Checkboxes to select the style .. this type is faster to select than dropdown boxes and gives you a quick overview of the style too. Try to implement this type of "preview" in other gui objects as well. The shade can be set not only to the differnt shades but also between them and to blank. In between them means that dithering should be used .. maybe even several dithering steps could be used .. f.x 2 parts 8 and one part $. Size can be set both with a slidebar and also with a textfield with a plus and a minus button next to it for finetuning. Consider also that dot is very much like feltpen with the shade ::: other stuff I also noticed. Text/selection works great .. except when you sometimes click a area with selection on and it tries to select the outline of what you clicked instead of switching to the text tool. It doesn't happen that often though. Consider making the 2 tools 1 .. with the same icon too. The "brush" tool looks very much like the feltpen , maybe the feature of defining your own brush should be added to the tools that use the feltpen too .. The preview field could change to be editable. The brush tools would then be remove from the toolbar as a seperate item. I would like the auxilery lines to be a separate toggle and not built into the watermark .. sort of like two differnt watermarks , this way you could adjust the auxlines against the watermark and then draw the text on that later .. maybe even with togglebutton that toggles the display of text. I would like the opertunity to drag and move auxilary points i have already set and have the lines adjust acordingly. A wizard to quickly let you choose between some common vanishing points and "scenes" (made with auxilary lines) Also delete in overwrite mode moves one step forward .. only space should do that And btw .. I too think there should a color option in JavE .. for ANSI and HTML coloring .. maybe even for ZZT screens ( http://zzt.org/ ) the ZZT lovers would also love to be able to draw in the standard DOS font. Figlet font export assistent is broken so is fractals and another idea for export : Export to .bat file echo "ascii-art goes\n here\n and here" that sort of thing. You could make your own text-art bootlogo for most OS's including DOS , Windows (the ones with DOS) and your favorite Unix platform
