I'm using Netscape 4.0 myself and I now what you mean.
I don't know how to fix that problem.
It doesn't really bother me by the way: I just press -control+A- to
select
all my text and set -fixed width-. (about two seconds work).
By the way some ascii drawings look great with the setting -variable
width-.
