Monospace means that each character takes up the same amount of horizontal space. That is, OOOOO and iiiii take up the same amount of space. An example of a monospace font is COURIER. Other fonts, i.e. Times New Roman, are not monospaced. If you try the above experiment in MS WORD with Times New Roman, you will find the horizontal space taken up by the five O's will be greater than that of the 5 i's. So, bottom line, when you have ascii art in MS WORD, highlight it and change the font to COURIER.
