I am also a non-programmer and have taken someone else's javascript animation and inserted my own drawings. So I basically know about as much as you do about the whole thing. However, the problem you are having is not one you can fix readily. It is the fault of your browser (MSiE 3.02). I don't know why the explorer insists on using a proportional font inside the scroll box. You'll have to ask them. You can put fixed width font into your animation til you're blue in the face but MSiE will continue to automatically switch your font to a proportional one.
