Hmmm.... the line _.-' looks fine in all programs I have. The opposite `-._ looks fine in my editor but not in my news program, there it looks a little bit "choppy", because there ' and ` both look the same, but the individual characters are still on the same height so the overall impression of a longer line made this way still looks quite good. The line you describe _.-~ looks like a line in the editor but in the news program it looks like it begins at the bottom, moves up and then moves _down_ a little...
