I had this thought too some time ago, and that is why I haven't told anyone how cancelling is done, except for those that I'm rather sure won't abuse the information -- that is, regular Ascii-art posters. Of course I can't ever be 100% sure, but why would regular Ascii art posters who post excellent ascii themselves want to wreck their own newsgroup by cancelling other people's on-topic posts? If anyone really wants to wreck our NG, they don't need ME to tell them how anyway. I have learned everything I know from some of the official Usenet FAQ's -- there's really not much official secrecy about cancelling. I really don't have enough patience and time to begin corresponding with ISP's trying to make them terminate their users' accounts, and secondly I'm not even sure it is possible, as long as the spammers fake their email adresses. For me, cancelling is the only way. If people in general don't think this is a good idea, I will simply stop cancelling, and then do nothing further - other people must take over. But something HAS to be done, IMHO. The spam is becoming worse and worse, and if nothing is done, we will simply drown in junk. I can't speak for other people, but if people decide to leave this NG unmoderated, okay, fine with me ... but I will be out of here for sure! I don't have patience for skipping 90% of the posts. I'm sure I'm not the only one. Talking about rampage... Lars.
