In a proportional font, these two lines will not line up: iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm In a fixed-width font, however, they will, effectively "decoding" ASCII art. Fixed width fonts date back from the days when computers couldn't do anything better; i.e. MS-DOS. Pretty much the only reason they still survive is ASCII art and cross-platform compatibility.
