I'd hazard a guess that Doug is scanning pictures in and then converting using some pretty standard imaging tricks. Grab an n by k chunk of pixels from scanned picture and determine the relative intensity (b&w) level of that chunk and replace it with the ASCII that has the most similar intensity. Cute and clever looking pictures ... but it is my impression that this is not quite the intent of this news group. BTW ...
