My >favorite hex editor (MS Developer) says its code is 172 (0xAC). And your favourite hex editor is correct. I was using the Windows character map program, and it uses Alt + 0188 in almost every font that contains the character at all. The only exception I could find was the 'Terminal' font which showed it as Alt + 0172. Using a DOS hex editor to look at it, it is indeed 0xAC. I guess Gates & Co. believe that "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds", and feel character mapping consistently is foolish. Go figure. See, now if I could draw, I would have here, a picture of a hobgoblin, a small mind, Bill Gates, and the fool from Waite & Smith's Rider Tarot Deck to illustrate the point. Not that I'm hinting or anything like that, you understand. Alan My real address is alanp @ netcom.ca (without spaces) but I'm sick of email spam.
