I know some of the vi-clones support rectangular yank/put's but I don't remember which. There might be some other things in the clones that would be useful. I found these mappings handy in regular vi: map {^ arrow} ^[klR map {v arrow} ^[jlR map {< arrow} ^[R map {> arrow} ^[llR These allow the arrow keys to freely move you around in 'R'eplace mode.
