Interestingly, I find that the perception of the order of the layers depends on which line your eyes are fixating on and the number of repeats you are overlaying. The above has three layers, or two, depending on which lines your eyes match, and the layering can vary (a varying illusion), and can be viewed using either the parallel or cross-eyed technique. If you were to take typical ascii art objects and arrange them similarly you would get the illusion of multiple layers by varying the repeat factor across the page. With a little ingenuity, and probably a lot of frustration, you could get objects occluding each other. You realise you've started something now, don't you?
