If you are on a unix based system there is a 4 step method you can use
which works

giftoppm <file1.gif >file2.ppm
ppmtopgm <file2.ppm >file3.pgm
pgmtopbm <file3.pgm >file4.pbm
pbmtoascii <file4.pbm >file5.ascii
