 <img src="spud.gif" alt="[A POTATO]"> has the following effect.

 Those of us blessed with image-capable browsers see 
  the picture from "spud.gif".


 Those of us who are on slow links, community based small machines,
  blind people needing text to convert into speech, and so forth,
 can have text only like this
    ____________________
   | $#@  [A POTATO]    |
   |_@@?________________|

 instead of the image.  What the person originating the problem -- it
  wasn't me -- wanted was to have linebreaks in the text, like
      [A
      POTATO]
 So that the text could be a small ascii line drawing
 of the picture in the gif.   


 People with text only browsers -- a substantial minority --
 would see the asciiart alternative.  If it could be done.
