The broswer treats text inside an alt="......" as ordinary text for typesetting i.e. (CR)s are stripped out from the input, and places it in one long horizontal box.
...<\pre> has no effect
on this process.

Logically you would hope there is something like "\n" for
inserting end-of-line into a string.  If there is,
then it's not "\n".   Try alt.html !!!
