I wanted to know as well.  I went to DejaNews and searched old news 
postings for "gif to ascii".  I found quite a bit about it and found a 
site for a gif to ascii convertor called GIFSCII.

Try it out and see if it works.  I haven't tried the program yet.

This site has a TONNE of converted GIF's
