It's considered art. The point of art is to be creative, if all art was "realistic" then it would be pretty bloody boring. Reach out and do something different. Anyway, if you didn't like ascii _ART_ then stay the hell out of the NG (as mentioned above). Personally I think ascii art is very creative. With your "realistic" pictures, all you have to do is copy something in "real life". But ascii, you must be creative, to make the thing you are drawing seem life like (or cartoon like) using the ascii characters.
