Really? I've never noticed those ones before. Let me check the ASCII man page. ... nope, there are still 127 characters, so it's 7 bit. You must be referring to the DOS extended character set. I mean, you are running DOS: >X-Mailer: Mozilla 3.0b6 (Win95; I; 16bit) >>Something extra to consider is that the TCP/IP protocol is 7-bit. >well, then i am glad that mine is auto-encoded Really? mobius09:~$ grep -i 8bit .netscape/preferences 8BIT_MAIL_AND_NEWS: False Your mailer allows you to send things 8 bit. But, from RFC 821 (SMTP): Commands and replies are composed of characters from the ASCII character set [1]. When the transport service provides an 8-bit byte (octet) transmission channel, each 7-bit character is transmitted right justified in an octet with the high order bit cleared to zero. Clearly, ASCII is 7 bit. -- Matt Corks, 1B Co-Op PMath, C.S. mvcorks@uwaterloo.ca, http://www.csclub.uwaterloo.ca/u/mvcorks/ "Millport is an island off the coast of Scotland.
