Very carefully. Seriously, I can only think of two possible ways the famous Scarecrow makes his sigs. 1) He comes up with a good idea (or sees a good idea somewhere else and copies it) and proceeds to create the graphic by hand (er, by keyboard?) or 2) He uses a little program called figlet which lets you type in words/phrases and spits out large versions in one of the many fonts available.
