I have uploaded the MSDOS utility ASCGIF.EXE in uuencoded form to 
alt.binaries.pictures.ascii and alt.binaries.pictures.utilities newsgroups.

It converts a GIF file to ASCII and has some options for zooming 
etc. I tried it on a small simple GIF and it worked. 

I have an idea I tried it some time ago on a larger and more 
elaborate coloured GIF and it did not work - probably because I 
don't have colour or graphics :-)
